The program for August 9 is The Boeing B-29 and the end of WWII.
Presenters are: Bruce Strange, a retired Boeing engineer,Andy Wheeler, and Lt. Col. Terrence Popravak, USAF (Ret.)
The war in Europe ended on May 8th, 1945. The war in the Pacific was still raging heavily. It would not be over until August 15th, 1945. We will take a look at several aspects and factors leading to the Japanese surrender and the
end of WWII.
We will host a panel on the Boeing B-29 Superfortress and the end of WWII.
Bruce Strange, a retired Boeing engineer, will talk about the “Battle of Kansas.” The B-29 was a complex aircraft and it presented many challenges to transition from production to combat. Andy Wheeler will present the actual introduction of the B-29 to combat, and the strategies employed to get the maximum results with the aircraft in combat.
Lt. Col. Terrence Popravak, USAF (Ret.), will give us an insight into the planned use and redeployment of the Eighth Air Force into the Pacific and the war on Japan. It is not widely known that some elements of the Eighth Air Force were established in the Pacific before the war ended.
